Apartments of Hao is a combination of European classical architecture and residents’ self-built balconies. The main structure of the building is a typical "luxury residence." On the facade, residents enclose their own balconies in their own way, transforming the monotonous appearance of the vertically repeated residential building into one full of vibrant life. This might be the only form of legally permissible personal construction on urban land in China. While these small enclosed balconies may not be considered "nouveau riche," they are enough to make each small family feel "proud."
